The Knabstrupper Connection
Knabstruppers in the UK and the US
The total Knabstrupper population of the US is now 1 .. A fabulous mare by Xanthos moved stateside late last year.
At the moment Sonesta Farms are eagerly awaiting 3 foals out of Knabstrupper approved mares by the legendary Apollon.
We believe there are a couple more operations also awaiting Apollon foals.
In the UK the only fully registered and approved Knabstrupper stallion is Centyfield Stud's fabulous Hamlet Frydenlund, who is competing with great success at Medium level Dressage and whose first foals have been fantastic ( see Centyfield Stud's website for further details )
Much as the British Appaloosa societies try to avoid the issue, at least one of their foundation stallions, Klaus, was definately a Knabstrupper.
It is mainly due to Apollon's owner Gwen Gregorio that the breed has started to attract interest in the US, and the arrival of Hamlet Frydenlund and his success in the Dressage arena has fuel interest in the UK.
This interest on both sides of the atlantic is caused by a wish to have access to quality spotted horses of true Sporthorse and Warmblood type - and that really only leaves Knabstruppers and spotted Polish Warmbloods (again look at the centyfield site for examples)
Our real aim is to find homes especially for high caliber good quality Knabstrupper mares in both the UK and the US, so that a small but functioning breeding base for these incredible horses can be developed.
UK buyers should start thinking in terms of mares - the price of Hamlet Frydenlund foals in the UK last year means that a good proportion of the cost of the mare could be recouped by selling the first foal, all Hamlet foals in 2001 sold for in excess of 3000 Pounds at weaning ..... and a foal out of a purebred Knabstrupper mare by Hamlet would likely be worth more.
US buyers should think about both mares and colts - There is frozen Apollon semen available in the US, and any approved WB stallion would also produce foals out of Knabstrupper mares which would be fully registerable as Knabstruppers with the RPSI - as well as probably eligible for AWR and AWS papers.
BEWARE ! Knabstruppers come in three types (see the "What's a Knabstrupper anyway" page !) So if you are after a particular type (and the current preference in the US and UK is for the Sporthorse type) please ask us to explain the bloodlines before committing yourself !
All three types are as "good" as each other, but if you want something specific it is better to get all the available information first !
Any questions what-so-ever at all : PLEASE just get in touch and ask !
